PANAMA - The summit of heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA), in session in Panama, ratified on Wednesday the willingness to advance in the process of regional integration, in a situation in which it is imperative to adapt to new realities.
The final declaration of the meeting, signed by representatives of Belize, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic, agreed on the need to redefine actions in a comprehensive way.
An important step in this regard will be the Special Summit of SICA to be held in San Salvador on July 20.
President of El Salvador Mauricio Funes said that one of the objectives of the meeting in Panama is to put governments in tune with the current situation, with participants ratifying as a priority the issue of security, as they committed to fight violence, as well as drug, arms and people trafficking.
SICA also expressed concern for the recent promulgation of a law in Arizona, in the United States, which represents a backward step regarding immigrants' rights.
Participants expressed satisfaction for the Partnership Agreement reached between Central America and the European Union after a complex negotiation period.
Also on Wednesday, political dialogue is expected between SICA countries and visiting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
